It is going to be a busy summer for the boys of ZZ Top. This weekend saw them finish off a five-day stint at the Venetian in Las Vegas, and they already have quite a few summer dates lined up including the co-headlining Blues & Bayous tour with John Fogerty.
You would think there would be little time left for any outside projects right? Wrong, ZZ’s front-man Billy Gibbons has hinted that he may be releasing new music, not from one project though, two.
The first new music with be a follow up to Gibbons’ 2015 solo album Perfectamundo, that he recorded with his band BFG, Gibbons also hinted that the new album would be in a different musical genre compared to the last one.
Gibbons explained: “Following the success of Perfectamundo, which was our stab at taking a piece from the Cuban influences…they’ve said, ‘OK, we’ve done this Cuban thing, can you go back to your bluesier roots?'” adding: “And we’ve decided to do just that. So, hopefully summertime we’ll see something BFG and blue coming out.”
Prior to ZZ Top, Gibbons had a band called The Moving Sidewalks, in 2013 he reunited with his former band-mates and played some select shows. Since then the outfit has gone back into the studio and started recording new material. Could we be hearing this soon? No word yet, but it is certainly on the horizon. Billy said: “Hopefully that’ll see the light of day. Probably this year.”
