The world has gone biopic crazy, and with the success of Bohemian Rhapsody, word has it that the story of Malcolm McLaren and the Sex Pistols could be next up.
Starlight Films’ Ayesha Plunkett, is said to be developing a movie about Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren and his partner in crime at the time, fashion designer Vivienne Westwood.
Plunkett told NME: “We were impressed by the box office takings for Bohemian Rhapsody,” adding: “It only goes to show the public has an appetite for these films.”
Question is, who’d play who? Plunkett said that she had a “wish list” for actors who would play the principal roles, and as of yet were not sure how big a part the Pistols will play in the upcoming movie.
Now punk royalty, McLaren found, formed, managed and promoted a host of British punk acts, as well as working with the New York Dolls, and putting together bands like Bow Wow Wow. He also enjoyed five Top 50 hits on the U.S. Dance charts, and even reached No. 1 with 1989’s “Deep in Vogue.”
McLaren passed away aged 64 in 2010, and as for Westwood, she is now 77 and was awarded an O.B.E. by the British Crown in 1992, upgraded later to a D.B.E. in 2006, which in the British honors system means she’s now technically entitled to be called Dame Vivienne. Who’d have thought?
