Even though it’s been over 20 years since he has been in the band, Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain has revealed that the band is still open to reuniting with vocalist Steve Perry. In fact, Cain said: “He’s always got a door open to come around,” adding: “Hopefully, we’ll break the ice one of these days.”
It’s not as if the band and Perry haven’t seen each other, Perry joined his ex-band mates when Journey was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in April 2017. Interestingly though, the singer decided not to perform with the group that night.
All this talk doesn’t seem to effect the current Journey singer Arnel Pineda. He idolizes Perry and got to meet his hero at the Hall of Fame induction. Perry very graciously hung out with the star struck singer after the event.
Cain explained how that went down: “That was a dream come true [for Arnel]. You know, one of his dreams or his wishes were, like, ‘I get to meet Steve Perry and be on the same stage with him’…And there he was.” Cain added: “Before I even saw Steve at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, he had spent time with Arnel, congratulating him on a job well done,” adds Cain. “The guy has got a lot of class. He’s a very soulful guy, and I wish him the best in his life.”
Cain still holds his time with Perry close to his heart, and noted that Perry was: “an incredible band leader [and he] knew how to rehearse.” Jonathan adds, “I mean, [to] go out and sing in one take, two takes. I’m like, ‘Who does that?’ But that’s the band we were.”
Journey’s U.S. co-headlining tour with Def Leppard will resume on July 1st in Atlanta.
