The news is in. The awesome, Red Hot Chili Peppers were just announced to be the top headliner for the Reading and Leeds Festival 2016. Add to that, The 1975, Courteeners and Hinds, and you start to get the makings of an already impressive bill.
For the Chili Peppers, it will be the band’s first appearance at Reading and Leeds in eight years. The band previously headlined the hugely successful festival in 1994, 1999 and 2007.
Fans of the band will be delighted to know promoters are describing next year’s gig as, “a festival exclusive,” as news filters through that the band’s set could very well feature material from the as-yet untitled, highly anticipated new album, produced by Danger Mouse.
As well as the other bands mentioned above, American alternative duo Twenty One Pilots, who sound like a hybrid of electronica and hip-hop; and London grime collective, Boy Better Know, founded by rappers Sketpa and Jme will join the bill.
The festival has come under fire for the last few years for its predominantly male line-ups. This year doesn’t look to be much different when you realize that out of the 10 acts named so far, only one–Spanish indie-rock group Hinds –has any female members.
As well as the big ticket bands, you will be able to check out London-based DJ EZ, rapper Rat Boy, and also punk duo, Slaves whose debut album Are You Satisfied? was nominated for this year’s Mercury Prize.
Bring in a few more female performers and this is a festival you won’t want to miss.
